Biography

Mark Earley

Mark W. Earley is the president of the Alumni Code Consulting Group, LLC., a consulting company focused on the National Electrical Code® (NEC®). He also serves as a columnist for Electrical Contractor Magazine, the magazine of the National Electrical Contractors Association. He recently retired as chief electrical engineer at the National Fire Protection Association. He served as secretary of the NEC from 1989 to 2019. He was the editor-in-chief for 11 editions of the National Electrical Code Handbook, co-author of NFPA’s reference book Electrical Installations in Hazardous Locations, and editor for the NFPA 70E® Handbook for Electrical Safety in the Workplace. Prior to joining NFPA, he worked as an electrical engineer at Factory Mutual Research Corporation (now FM Global). Additionally, he has served on several of NFPA’s electrical committees and NEC code-making panels. Mr. Earley is a registered professional engineer (licensed in Rhode Island) and a member of the International Association of Electrical Inspectors (IAEI), the Society of Fire Protection Engineers (SFPE), the Automatic Fire Alarm Association (AFAA), the U.S. National Committee of the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC), and the Canadian Electrical Code, Part 1 Committee. He was a member of the UL Electrical Council for 33 years. He is a life member of NFPA, an honorary life member of the US National Committee of IEC, and a life senior member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), His other memberships include the Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association, and the American Radio Relay League.

He has also been the recipient of various awards in the electrical industry, including the Richard G. Bierman award from the NFPA Electrical Section, the Elihu Thompson Electrotechnology Medal from the American National Standards Institute two distinguished service awards from the U.S. National Committee of the International Electrotechnical Commission, the meritorious service award from the American National Standards Institute (ANSI), two awards for outstanding service to the electrical industry from the National Electrical Contractors Association (NECA) and the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW), and the honorary Artie’s Apple Award from the Southwestern Section of IAEI, in recognition of his dedication and exemplary efforts toward education. He was also the recipient of an Amazon best seller award for the 1999 National Electrical Code Handbook. He has taught and spoken at electrical industry events around the US and internationally. He was the keynote speaker for the Electric West trade show in 1996 and was the keynote speaker for the IEEE Product Safety Engineering Society in 2018.

Mr. Earley earned his Master of Science in management from Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University and his Bachelor of Science degree majoring in electrical engineering from Roger Williams University.
